During the excavations of 2001 in the Rhine valley near the Kaiserstuhl hills north of Freiburg, Germany (map: fig. 59), several Celtic coins were found: 1 Kaletedou quinarius, 18 potin coins of the Leuci and Sequani, 17 aes coins of a special 'Riegel type'. In addition, a hoard of 27 Celtic gold staters (ca. 6.6 grams each, ca. 37% Au) of the Philip type (Obv. head of Apollo, Rev. horse(s ?), see fig. 58) was found. Some of them were still in the original pot (fig.60). The hoard seems to have been buried in the second half of the second century BC. Cf. N.N., Apollo in Riegel. Antike Welt 33/H.2 (2002) p.226. (A. Carignani)

(A. Carignani)

The author analyzes the coins of this medieval Serbian ruler (1228-1234), and describes four types, one and two in silver and three and four in copper. Analysis of types, style and weight standard indicate that the prototype for Radoslav's issues was the coinage of Empire of Thessalonica. Direct analogies between the issues of Manuel Angelos of Thessalonica and types one and four indicate that these two types should be dated to 1230 or the period following this year. The author rejects the theory that Radoslav's coins were struck in Thessalonika, although their style indicates that the dies were cut by artisans from that city. One Serbian mint certainly existed in the fortress of Ras, evinced by finds of coin blanks and bullion, and type two and perhaps type three should be assigned to that mint. The question of the minting location of types one and four remains open. English summary. (Charles B. Smith, Jr.)

The author re-examines Sergije Dimitrijevic's interpretation of this hoard discovered in 1966, which itself represented the largest such discovery in a quarter-century, and from which examples have probably worked themselves into all larger collections of Serbian medieval coins. Neither the exact place of discovery is recorded, nor the exact size of the hoard. It appears to have consisted of a minimum of 800 pieces, and Dimitrijevic's estimate of 1060 appears within a probable range for the total hoard, although he gave no concrete basis for this estimate. Of the 740 published coins, Dimitrijevic attributed 466 (nine types) to Emperor Uroš before his 1355 accession to the throne, and 220 (two types) tentatively to Despot Jovan Uglješa. Based on reexamination of Serbian coining practices during this period and reinterpretation of coin inscriptions, the author assigns all of these to the earliest emissions of Lazar Hrebljanovic. The extremely rare appearance of these types in other hoards is due to their being among the very earliest issues of Lazar, which may have been demonetized on their replacement by his regular issues. The deposit date of the hoard should be placed immediately following the death of Uroš in early December 1371. English summary. (Charles B. Smith, Jr.)

A two-liter earthen jug found in the 1950s among the roots of a tree being cut down on the grounds of Orehek Castle (4 km east-southeast of Postojna, Slovenia) yielded a hoard of silver coins. Six pieces preserved from the hoard are described: Three are anonymous grossi minted in Merano bearing inscriptions COMES TIROL/DE MERANO, of a type minted by Meihard of Tyrol with his brother Albert II of Gorizia from 1259 to 1274/5. The rest were of a type later known as kreuzers and inscribed COMES TIROL/MEINARDV. They are attributed to Meinhard II of Tyrol after 1274. The growing proportion of Old Style eastern denarii of Septimius Severus in third-century British denarius hoards has been taken to show gradual long-distance infiltration of coin into Britain, and used as evidence of the monetary integration of the Roman Empire. This paper uses Richard Abdy's catalogue of the Shapwick hoard to argue that the increasing proportion of Old Style eastern denarii is due to the withdrawal of heavier coins of Septimius, not long-distance movements of coin. The final section of the paper investigates denarii of Septimius in 30 Continental hoards. (R.P. Duncan-Jones)
