Elam Appointed ANS Executive Director

Executive Director, a new position created by vote of the Council at its meeting of July 19. ANS President Arthur A. Houghton explained that, through the Executive Director, the Council now has a chief operating officer of the Society who reports directly, on behalf of the entire organization, to the President and the Council. In turn, Mr. Elam expressed his great appreciation to the Council for this vote of confidence in his ability to guide the administration of the Society at this, the threshold of what promises to be an exciting and highly rewarding chapter in the Society's history.

In announcing the new position, Mr. Houghton indicated that the decision of the Council will be reflected in several proposed amendments to the Society's Constitution, which will be placed before the membership at the ANS Annual Meeting on October 25.

Proposed Amendments

It shall, from time to time, elect such other officers as it may deem desirable, all of whom shall serve at the pleasure of the Council. Two or more offices may be held by one person.

Article 7.3.

In the event of the death, disability, refusal to act, or absence of the President, the senior available Vice-President shall be President pro tem. In the event of the death, disability, refusal to act, or absence of all Vice-Presidents, the Executive Director shall be President pro tem.

He shall be the executive officer for the Council performing such of its duties as it may direct, and shall report directly to the Council. He may make recommendations to the Council as to coordination of interdepartmental activities and the execution of policies established by the Council. Article 7.7.

All instruments requiring the corporate seal may be executed by either the President, Vice-President, Treasurer or Executive Director, and the Secretary or Assistant Treasurer.

ANS Councillors Nominated

At its meeting on July 19, the Society's Council nominated five incumbent Councillors for election to new three- year terms and voted to place two new members in nomination for election as Councillors at the Society's Annual Meeting on October 25, 1997.

The following incumbents were nominated as members of the Council for the term ending 2000: Kenneth L. Edlow; Arthur A. Houghton III; Eric P. Newman; Donald G. Partrick; and Landon Thomas.

Two New Candidates

Nominated for the term ending 1999 is Clifford L. Mishler, President of Krause Publications, headquartered in Iola, WI. Cliff Mishler has been with the company, founded by Chet Krause, since 1963, serving in positions of increased responsibility from staff, then editor of Numismatic News, through corporate v.p. positions to President in 1990. Mr. Mishler became a Life Fellow of the ANS in 1978 (Assoc. 1958; Fellow 1968); he is a life member of ANA (he received the Farran Zerbe Award in 1984) and various other numismatic clubs and organizations. He is co-author of several Krause catalogues, including World Coins and Commemorative Medals and Tokens.

Nominated for the term ending 2000 is Ellen R. Reeder, Curator of Ancient Art, Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, MD. Dr. Reeder, who received the Ph.D. in classical archaeology from Princeton in 1974, has also held academic appointments at George Washington University and Johns Hopkins. Her principal books include Pandora: Women in Classical Greece (Princeton, 1995) and Hellenistic Art in the Walters Art Gallery (in association with Princeton U. Press, 1988); a volume to accompany the exhibition, "From Alexander to Cleopatra: Greek Art of the Hellenistic Age." She is currently a Member-at-Large of the Managing Committee of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.

Those nominated comprise the slate of the Nominating Committee to be presented for election as Councillors, for the terms designated, at the Annual Meeting of the ANS. Additional nominations, filed in accordance with the provisions of Article 6.3 of the Society's Constitution, must be reported to the Secretary at least 15 days before the Annual Meeting.

ANNUAL GIVING 1997

Council Challenge Grant

The Society is thankful for the support of its members. At the July 19 meeting of the ANS Council, it was reported that we were $30,000 short of our goal of $100,000 for the Society's fiscal year which ends September 30. Generous members of the Council have made a challenge grant of $15,000 to encourage the membership to meet this important Society-wide goal.

We are asking you to match this challenge. We need at least to reach our goal, but we hope to exceed it. Your gift at this time will put us over the top.

A Vibrant Organization

It is certainly apparent from this newsletter that the Society strives to serve its members. We had two very important coins on display at the ANA Convention which took place in New York City this summer for the first time since 1976 - the Brasher Doubloon and the 1804 Dollar. Our table was a beehive of activity with everyone wanting to examine these rarely seen pieces. Also we had the first demonstration of the new CD-ROM, "Coins of the Roman World."

This summer the Society honored its volunteers and inaugurated a Distinguished Volunteer Award. We also celebrated our fifty year members. There were eight 50-year members this year!

The ANS now has a web page on the Internet and we hope that many of our members have had the opportunity to browse our site. As noted elsewhere in this newsletter, through the cooperation of the Harry Bass Research Foundation, we have mounted our database of over 500,000 objects from our collection, for the benefit of ANS members and the public.

On November 8 and 9 the ANS will have a most interesting COAC on "The Medal in America." There will be two major exhibits in conjunction with the conference: a retrospective exhibit of the work of American medalist Gilroy Roberts and a joint exhibit of contemporary work by members of the American Medallic Sculpture Association and the British Art Medal Society.

Member Supported

It would be impossible for the Society to continue in its efforts to serve its members if it were not for your financial support. You have just received a letter asking for your contribution to match the ANS Council Challenge Grant for Annual Giving. We hope that your heart and your pen will reach out to the Society.

We look forward to your contributions and to any ideas you have as to how we may serve you better.
