The Society's Council has approved the report of the Nominating Committee for Officers of the American Numismatic Society for the coming year. Those recommended will be placed in nomination at the Organizational Meeting of the Council following the Annual Meeting on October 26, 1996.
Named are: President, Arthur A. Houghton III; First Vice-President, Allen F. Lovejoy; Second Vice-President, Roger A. Hornsby; Treasurer, Landon Thomas; Director and Secretary, Leslie A. Elam; Assistant Treasurer, Terrance Lindall.
Also approved by the Council is the report of the Nominating Committee for Councillors, placing in nomination five incumbent Members of the Council for three-year terms expiring October 1999: Mr. Harry W. Bass Jr. of Dallas, who served as President of the ANS 1978-84 and is Chairman of the Harry Bass Research Foundation; Mrs. Marion G. Russell, former Editor of Coin World newspaper, a member of the Society's Executive and Governance Committees as well as several ANS Standing Committees; and three members elected to one-year terms in 1995 and now nominated for their first full terms: Dr. Martha Carter, a resident of Madison, Wisconsin where she is active in civic and cultural affairs; earlier this year, she was appointed Chairman of the Society's Education Committee; Mr. Jonathan H. Kagan of New York, a General Partner of Lazard Freres in New York and Managing Director of Corporate Partners, appointed in 1995 as a member of the Society's Finance Committee; and Dr. Arnold-Peter Weiss of Barrington, Rhode Island, an orthopaedic surgeon who also holds appointment as Associate Professor at the Brown University School of Medicine, also appointed in 1995 to the ANS Finance Committee. Dr. William S. Kable of New York, the fourth Councillor elected in 1995, has decided for personal reasons to resign his position on the Society's Council. Mr. Robert A. Robinson of New Canaan, Connecticut, a member of the Council and Finance Committee since 1992, had earlier informed the Society of his retirement as of October 1996.
Also at the duly meeting, two new candidates were placed in nomination as Councillors for the term ending 1998: Dr. Stephen K. Scher, CEO of Scher Chemicals and past Chairman of the Department of Art History at Brown University. A specialist in Renaissance medals, he conceived and supervised all phases of the extraordinarily successful exhibition, "The Currency of Fame," which was seen at the National Gallery, The Prick, and in Edinburgh; and Mr. Ben Lee Damsky, an engineer who serves as Manager of Power Electronic Systems of the Electric Power Research Institute in San Francisco, CA. An advanced student of Roman imperial coinage, he has published in the Society's journal, lectured twice to the Graduate Seminar students and elsewhere and is a systematic and generous contributor to the ANS Roman cabinet.
At its July meeting, the Council received, with great regret, Prof. Glen W. Bowersock's decision not to stand for reelection. In recognition and respect, the following Resolution of Appreciation was voted:
Whereas Glen W. Bowersock has served with distinction on the ANS Council since 1983 and its Executive Committee since 1987; and
Whereas he chaired the Committee on Goals and Priorities, whose report to the Council in October 1985 continues to serve as the basis for the Society's long range planning; and
Whereas his advice and counsel has served the Society well during these past thirteen years;
Therefore, we express to Glen W. Bowersock on the occasion of his retiring from the Council of the ANS, the profound thanks and best wishes of the Council and the Membership.
Nominations of the seven Council Members will be made at the Annual Meeting of the Society to be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 26, 1996, at the ANS. The program will feature reports by members of the library and curatorial staffs discussing important accessions of the past year, a selection of which will be on display. Members and the public are invited to attend.
