The American Numismatic Society is seeking to fill a position of a second Margaret Thompson Curator of Greek Coins. The Society hopes to recruit an energetic and creative curator to oversee its collections of Greek and Roman Provincial coins as well as other parts of the collection. The successful individual is expected to work with Dr. Peter van Alfen, Margaret Thompson Associate Curator of Greek Coins and the other curatorial staff. S/he will have to be prepared to work on parts of the collection outside the ancient field. The successful candidate is expected to work on the ANS’s exhibition program, contribute to the ANS Magazine, and do research in his or her own chosen field. All ANS curators are expected to participate actively in the Society's development, outreach and public relations initiatives. Curators also provide instruction in Classical numismatics at the ANS Graduate Seminar and elsewhere.
The Curator should hold or be about to finish a Ph.D. or have equivalent qualifications in a related field, such as history, art history, or archaeology. The Curator should also be proficient in other foreign languages, including ancient Greek, and two modern languages. The Curator is expected to be or become a recognized expert in his/her field, through study, research, writing, and publication on coinage, the ancient world and other fields. The position is fully endowed and allows a competitive salary with excellent benefits depending on the experience of the successful candidate.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Curator of Greek Coins
The Margaret Thompson Curator of Greek Coins reports to the Executive Director and is in charge of some 100,000 ancient Greek coins, as well as of some gems and a collection of forgeries and casts. The curator is also expected to take charge of areas of the collection outside the ancient field by assisting in registration, publications and exhibitions. The curator is responsible for maintaining the collection in order, according to general museum practices, and classified in such a way that it can be easily accessible to visitors of all kinds. The Curator is also responsible for registration, on-line cataloguing and updating of records according to the latest scholarship. The Curator makes recommendations regarding new acquisitions and proper disposition of numismatic material and recommends loans when appropriate.
The Curator should hold a Ph.D. or have equivalent qualifications in classical studies, ancient history or archaeology. He/she is expected to be or to become a recognized expert in some area of Greek numismatics through publications and lectures of the highest scholarly level. He/she supervises and instructs students of the ANS Graduate Seminar and at other institutions when invited to teach a course or a seminar. The Curator is expected to maintain contacts with other institutions of higher learning and seek active collaboration with colleagues in related disciplines. The Curator will also make every effort to further the general knowledge of ancient coins among the general public, and will participate in the Society’s exhibition, development, education and public relations initiatives.
