ANS Appoints Robert Hoge as its First
Curator of American Coins and Currency

The American Numismatic Society announced that Robert Hoge will join the Society as its first Curator of American Coins and Currency, a new endowed position. The Council of the ANS confirmed the appointment at its meeting on June 23. Mr. Hoge, who is presently curator of the American Numismatic Association, will take up his new position in New York City in September.

"We are delighted that Bob Hoge will be working with us," says Ute Wartenberg, Executive Director of the ANS. "Bob's extraordinary knowledge of numismatics will be a particular benefit to the ANS in advancing the study and appreciation of our large and diverse collection, particularly our significant collection of US coins and currency." Mr. Hoge holds a BA in Anthropology from the University of Colorado and did postgraduate work in Anthropology at the University of Chicago.

Over the last 20 years he has published over 200 articles and books based on his extensive research on a wide variety of subjects in numismatics. While much of his work concentrates on US numismatics, he has also written on Chinese, medieval, Islamic and various other world coins. He is a Fellow of the RNS and the ANS, a member of ICOMON and many other organizations.

ANS President Donald Partrick, who was a member of the Search Committee, commented on the appointment: "We have been looking for the right person in this key position for over a year. Bob Hoge is a superb addition to our staff. The US collectors and researchers will now have a well-known numismatist at the ANS who will help them with their questions and bring insight and expertise to their field." Regarding his new appointment, Bob Hoge said "I am pleased and honored to be able to serve such an august organization as the ANS."
