SPECIFIC WAYS OF GIVING TO THE ANS

Many types of resources may be used to make a gift to the ANS: Cash, Securities, Real Property, or Retirement Accounts. You may use a variety of methods to make the gift: check, credit card, bequest, life income agreements (charitable gift annuities, deferred gift annnuities, pooled life income funds, and charitable remainder trusts), life estates, or lead trusts. Please consult your financial advisor, or call the Office of Development to discuss how your gift will help the ANS and also benefit you. Your gift may be restricted or unrestricted. An unrestricted gift is simply a gift to the ANS with no restrictions from the donor on how it is to be used. Gifts can be directed to a particular Department or Program and still be considered unrestricted. Your Annual Fund is a good example of an unrestricted gift. Unrestricted gifts allow the ANS flexibility in directing resources to the institutions greatest needs.

Policy on Privacy and Confidentiality

The ANS Office of Development adheres to the highest standards of privacy and confidentiality in regard to the ANS's donors. We do not allow unauthorized use of any information in files, whether in print or electronic format, that are maintained, stored, or processed by the Office of Development, or permit anyone else to make unauthorized use of such information.

We do not seek personal benefit or permit others to benefit personally from any confidential information that has come to them by virtue of their work assignment, nor do we exhibit or divulge the contents of any record or report to any person except in the conduct of their work assignment and in accordance with ANS and departmental policies. We never knowingly include or cause to be included in any record or report a false, inaccurate, or misleading entry. Requests for anonymity are honored, as are requests concerning solicitation.

ENDOWMENT for CURATORIAL AND STAFF POSITIONS

The ANS endowment is the institution's invested capital that generates funds to be used, in perpetuity, to support the curators, librarian, administrative and executive staff and programs.

Unrestricted endowment earnings support the general operating budget, or the greatest needs of a particular division if so specified. Other endowment funds support scholarships, awards, book funds, or programs, as specified by the donors. An endowed scholarship or fellowship is a permanent tribute to the person whose name it bears, and it can always be augmented. Scholarships provide opportunities otherwise unavailable to deserving students.

Endowment income provides a hedge against downturns in the economy, federal and state budget cuts, fluctuations in the political climate, and other changes.

Today's young numismatists benefit from the endowment gifts of previous generations. Tomorrow's ANS is being created by today's endowment gifts. Contact the Office of Development for details.

THE ANNUAL FUND OF ANS

and THE MID-YEAR APPEAL

General unrestricted gifts to the ANS are credited toward the   Annual Fund. Donations can be designated to a specific curatorial department or program or dedicated in support of the ANS greatest needs, allowing the ANS greater flexibility in meeting those needs.

Unrestricted gifts contributed on an annual basis have a direct and immediate impact of the quality of the ANS's services. In addition, every donation, regardless of the amount, can serve as a catalyst for generating additional support. Foundations and corporations regularly look at the level of support contributed by those closest to the ANS when considering extending support to the ANS.

GIFTS OF SECURITIES

The ANS welcomes your gift of appreciated securities. While many donors prefer to make gifts of cash - a growing number are taking advantage of contributing gifts of long-term appreciated securities to support the ANS. As a rule, a Donor may avoid capital gains tax and take a tax deduction based on the full fair market value of the shares contributed provided that the donor's overall charitable deductions for the calendar year do not exceed 30-percent of the donor's adjusted gross income. If your deductions exceed the 30-percent threshold, they can be spread over a period of no more than five years. If you donate appreciated securities for more than one year, you may:

Receive an income tax charitable deduction based on the market value of the security at the time of the gift.

Avoid capital gains tax on the appreciated value of the securities.

Direct your gift to a variety of different purposes at the ANS.

Fund a life income gift agreement and potentially receive a greater income.

WILLS and BEQUESTS:

Create a Legacy for the Future - Wills are the central pillar of estate planning. A gift by will, know as a bequest, provides the opportunity to create a legacy for the ANS once your needs and those of your loved ones have been met.

Taxes and estate settlement costs can be minimized.   Valued property can be used to express your commitment to furthering the research and educational programs of the ANS.   You can designate your gift to the ANS that meets your interest, and is also tax effective.   The ANS is please to assist you and your legal counsel by providing wording to ensure the ANS can accept your gift as you intend. Bequests provide the support the ANS needs to maintain it position as the foremost institution of its kind devoted to the study of coins, medals and paper currency.

Please contact the Office of Development (212-571-4470 ext 1307) if you wish to further discuss your Will.
