about the lecture

When, in 1944, Edward Newell left his superb collection of over 87,000 coins to the American Numismatic Society, he single-handedly created one of the greatest museum collections in the world. His interests were concentrated in the Hellenistic era, and the ANS holds to this day one the best collection of coins of Alexander the Great and his successors, but the Newell bequest covers a much broader geographical and chronological range too. Ute Wartenberg Kagan’s lecture will describe how the collections are used for research and exhibition and how members and staff have continued to build the ancient cabinet. Over the last couple of years, the ANS has been fortunate to be able to add significantly to its collection. Dr. Wartenberg Kagan will present some of these new coins in the ancient Greek area for the first time.
