American Numismatic Society

Year End Appeal 2009

Dear Friends,

Like so many other institutions, the American Numismatic Society has endured a difficult year. Luckily for us, we had taken early steps to reduce our exposure to the stock market before its decline, as well as to reduce our expenditures. We are therefore happy to report that our financial situation is healthy, and we are set on strengthening the Society’s programs over the next few years. In order to continue our regular activities and begin implementing some of our new ideas, we need the help of our friends and members. Please consider an end-of-year gift to the American Numismatic Society and support our dedicated staff and programs such as our lectures, exhibitions and regular services to members. With your generous support, we will be able to initiate new ideas, which will make numismatic research and outreach available to more people.

The Trustees decided last October that the Society's main goal over the next few years will be a stronger online presence. The website presence of the ANS dates back to 1997, when, thanks to the generosity of the late President Harry W. Bass Jr., the ANS surprised the world with online databases of its cabinet and library holdings. Today we are proud to announce that a new library catalogue will be available to the public by early 2010. For the collections, the staff has set itself an ambitious target over the coming year of adding images of 50,000 coins, medals and other objects, while providing a variety of other improvements to the database.

In recent years many of you have shown your appreciation of the Society's work by giving beautiful coins, leaving a legacy or volunteering your time. As President of this institution I am very grateful for your support, and I can assure all our members that the Trustees will manage carefully our endowments while making available the best possible programs. Needless to say your donations help to sustain a great professional staff. Please join me in supporting this great institution and donate generously.

Sincerely yours,

Roger S. Siboni
